It's been a slow start to the snow season, but we had 10 fresh inches of powder, so I put it through the test. Edge Hold: Nice solid grip that doesnt wash easily when it gets hard. The more we rode this the more we liked it. Even if you are a beginner who is committed to the sport you could go with this. The added camber makes it carve up the pipe wall better than the older model. Ive had no problem on more mellow entry level boxes and bonks but its not something Id like to ride on more technical advanced jibs. Uneven Terrain: Not bad here for such a stiff flex. The Jones Mountain Twin delivers what it advertisesan easy-going, surfy, catch-free, light, and poppy board with everything needed to take on a whole mountain from top to bottom. Its also not bad if you have to deal with icy off piste kind of snow that you might find on the way to a powder stash or on a slack country adventure. Speed:There is a bit of improvement when it comes to speed and the nose/tail doesnt chatter as much as it use to from 2013 and even 2014. That combined with the early rise rocker in the nose gives much better float than most mountain freestyle twins that have minimal set back on board that is often closer to 1 back from the center of the board. Helmet: Smith Maze, Smith Vantage The Mountain Twin is the only one of your choices that has it. I think the thing that I like most was how stable it was at high speed on every surface, and how it boogied around trees. Im always really confident even in icy conditions. It tracks super well when one footing off a chair or down a long flat cat track without the fear of catching an edge. The Jones Mountain Twins base is pretty fast and the board is pretty damp. Short to wide radius turns are fun and have a nice spring out of them. Still its easy to butter. For jumping, this board has a nice, predictable pop to it. Nothing exceptional but above average with a good wax job. It doesnt feel like its super stiff like boards of old but instead it feels like there is a rubbery bit of insulation. Its just another improvement on the existing ride. 162: 12-13 From what I can tell it will be a bit stiffer and more suited to pow and faster speeds than the basic/typo. Powder: The set back on board 4.5 is the same as it was before but just with a more narrow stance. Switch: So even though the tail has less volumeit doesnt until after the effective edge so its a twin between the feet. Or, if you want somethitng a bit more directional, faster turning and more floaty the Jones Frontier is a great choice. He's 105 lbs, but the Typo only goes down to 149cm. With the stance set all the way back it can be a pretty good very easy floating powder board. It stays above the snow well even when its centered. Uneven Terrain: With a little extra work it can weave in and out through bumps but its not a specialist here. I mainly ride this board centered but even when its a little set back to get more centered over the camber its easy to ride switch. For example, the 156 was still slow for me at size 9 boots but it could have been a lot slower. Nothing out of the ordinary but it can ollie rather well. It is a solid recommendation for those that can only get one board and want it to do a little of everything. Its easy on approach and forgiving on the landing. Basically this board is very versatile. The flex is perfect for the pipe. Jumps: Pretty good pop here. Turn Ons/Swipe Right: Buttery & Forgiving. Uneven Terrain: We actually like the Jones Mountain Twin better here with uneven terrain than the Jones Ultra Mountain Twin. It can really handle riders of any level. You can really lay it out. Approximate Weight Feels pretty normal or just a shade on the light side of normal. Our Recommended Boots: Adidas Tactical ADV, Burton Imperial, Burton Ion Usually they excel in one condition but falter in another but not this ride. On Snow Feel/Skidded Turns: The Jones Mountain Twin is a super stable ride but isnt catchy. Set-Up: 21, 21.5, 22 Wide. Its also not super unforgiving on small to mid jumps either. It tracks really well into jumps too. Missing pop some YES boards Have. It has many similarities to theYES The Basicbut its a step up in tech and performance. The YES Standard does this better than most all-mountain boards because of this setback and the reduced volume in the tail. Just dont get this if you have mini-disc bindings because then you cant use the slam back inserts. Most YES Camrock boards have more camber. Edge Hold:A step below magnetraction for sure. Thats why it isnt called the Jones Park Twin. Really engaging the sidecut makes the Jones Mountain Twin grip and carve well in most condition you want to ride. It makes the YES Standard one of the better all mountain boards out there for powder. However if you compare this to something like theJones Flagshipits going to come up a short. 15 front -15 back and centered. So before the Jones Mountain Twin was bordering on the slow side of medium. Jibbing: Its a little on the stiff side for jibbing but you can make it happen. Its almost all camber now and will look like a camber board unless you look closely. The Jones Mountain Twin has a medium flex between the bindings with a little softer flex in the nose. So you can generally go with a little bit bigger in boot size than you normally would. Its not enough to take away from feel of the board but just enough to make it feel damp without not being dead. The camber ends at about the the last binding insertsgiving the Jones Mountain Twin a whole new feel. Over that week I rode it a bunch. So all in all the Yes Standard continued on where the 2016 Optimistic left off and even though it has a moderately stiffer flex its a really fun quick turning all mountain ride. It adopted the Middle Bite tech from the Yes Jackpot, got a blunt nose/tail, changed the waist width sizing and considerably narrowed the reference stance. Carving: Really fun to carve. We dont feel its a 7 out of 10 but more like a 5 out of 10. Rails and Jibbing You can hit rails and go through the jib park but there are many better boards out there than the Jones Mountain Twin. Price Range: Jones Mountain Twin vs. Pipe: There is good edge hold for hard pipes and it inspires confidence while still being forgiving. It was also very easy to pop off natural terrain. Maybe its the mellow magnetraction bump in the middle but it just doesnt snap edge to edge super quick. Its got a nice wide platform underfoot that is stable for take-offsand landings. . Id say my only complaint with the Mtn Twin is the turn initiation is not that fast in tighter tree situations. Other than that the Jones Mountain Twin floats almost as well or almost as well as many dedicated powder boards. The only issue here is the Slam back inserts require a full size disc binding. If you are looking for a one board quiver this is why we recommend boards like this because they can double as a set back surfy freeride board when set all the way back and give you a taste of that directional freeride feel. If your boots match the width its a great board to turn. If you get this board its meant to be ridden switch a lot so dont buy it if you are a directional rider. However, I got bored with it after two subsequent trips out west. I thought about trying the 153 but the max stance width is 22.1 so I couldnt even get to my minimum 22.5 stance width for that board. Turning Experience/Carving: So if you want a more powerful turner the YES Ghost with that extra camber or boards like the Korua Otto or Loaded Algernon will give you a more rewarding turning experience. I dont worry about making it through the flats but I do worry about weaving in and out around slower skiiers and riders when Im on this board. Carving: We liked the improved edge hold with Middle Bite and it helps the board carve better in harder conditions. It can even do pretty well in ice if you have to ride it. I can only recomand this board .. Just took my 2015 Mountain Twin out for a breaking in yesterday. Then I went to the burton process and loved it, it was easy to ride and the camber profile was great. Speed: This board is very damp and stable at speed. The Jones Mountain Twin is a good example why your measurements are important: Jones specifies the Mtn Twin 157 as 25.4 cm "shaping waist width".
